When did I arrive? I don’t recall ever leaving Alaska
Why do I hate the dark when I’m alone?
I was on my way, to a brighter day I’m still chasing around
But somehow I believe that this is home
It’s so good to be home

Steve McCurry first came into the spotlight in the late 1970s when he dressed himself in native clothing and went into Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion. His resulting images, smuggled out by sewing the film into his clothes, were the first to depict the conflict and were published worldwide.
“Life is a journey up a spiral staircase; as we grow older we cover the ground covered we have covered before, only higher up; as we look down the winding stair below us we measure our progress by the number of places where we were but no longer are. The journey is both repetitious and progressive; we go both round and upward. ~ William Butler Yeats, The Winding Star, 1933
